The Malate Church is a building following the Baroque architecture. 

The original building was constructed in 1588 but after a typhoon and an earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1864. During World War II, the church suffered a lot, making it one of the most storied and historical buildings on our list of old churches in the Philippines with names we would like to introduce today.

Known under the name Paoay Church, the building stands out for its ornate stone finials and 24 coral-block buttresses

Known under the name Paoay Church, the building stands out for its ornate stone finials and 24 coral-block buttresses. The construction started in 1604 and finished in 1710. The bell tower was built in the second half of the 18th century. 

Since the Philippines is constantly threatened by natural disasters like earthquakes so the baroque architecture is intended to prolong the life the structures. The Paoay Church is one of such buildings. 

The title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the only reason why it makes it to our list of old churches in the Philippines with names but it does turn the building into a popular tourist attraction.

Let’s start our list of old churches in the Philippines with names with a prime example of fortress baroque style one. 

The church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Iloilo was built from the local sandstone in 1797. It was burnt down twice and has stood witness to earthquakes and typhoons. 

What makes the church even more special is the fact that Filipino masters carved the entire surface of the building and it was decorated with local folk motifs and western baroque style.

The San Agustin Church is another baroque-style church, making an impression with its tromp l’oeil style ceiling paintings and Baroque altars. 

Constructed from 1587 to 1606, this is one of the old churches in the Philippines with names we would like to introduce for its history and legacy. 

The San Agustin Church is also Manila’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only structure survived World War II the in Intramuros.

Among Manila’s concrete jungle and amid the tallest building in the Philippines, stands a prime example of Baroque and Renaissance architecture. The facade is simple yet impressive with rose windows, arched entrance, and columns. 

The church was built in 1629 but some parts of the building was rebuilt later. It survived an earthquake in 1882 but lost part of its roof collapsed. In a struggle between the locals and the Americans, the church was burnt. However, its persistence was shown when it stood tall during World War II. 

In 1983, the Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church opened again. It is definitely one of the old churches in the Philippines with names people should know about.

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion is another Baroque church in the Philippines that has been recognized as a World Heritage Site. 

The structure was built in 1765 and stands out for its reinforced walls and brick facade to help it withstand earthquake. A bell tower was built in 1810. The most unique feature of this building is the 85-step stairway leading to a Virgin Mary carving on top of a tree. 

The church is featured on our list of old churches in the Philippines with names because it’s a prime example of Peripheral Baroque architecture.
